Adaptive filters are used to remove different types of noise from images. There are several types of filters that can be used to remove noise from images but all of these filters work well with one specific type of noise only. However, the same image can contain multiple types of noise and for these cases an adaptive filter can provide the real solution. Adaptive filters change their filtering characteristics depending on the image content and in this way they can produce excellent results with any type of noise.
