Opening ports/channels for fax broadcasting

In order to perform any fax broadcasting, the first step is to open one or more ports for use by the Impact Fax broadcast.  A port corresponds to a single communication line to be used for faxing.  Most modems correspond to a single COM port, such as COM 1.   There are also additional multiport modems which can have multiple ports on a single piece of hardware.

High end fax boards such as Brooktrout, Dialogic and NMS typically have two or more ports.  A fax board which can handle T1 lines contains 24 ports per T1 line.  For example, a quad T1 card would have 4 X 24 ports, or 96 ports.
