Can't install over Remote Desktop Connection

Postby Foo Bar » Fri Sep 02, 2005 2:57 pm

We have a software product that embeds the Black Ice TIFF driver for Windows NT/2000/XP. We are using RTK v6.18 MonoNTDriver v6.23.

We have a custom installation routine (our own SETUP.EXE which we happen to use InstallShield to create) that works great most of the time. But when we attempt to install our product on Windows XP SP2 through a RDP connection, the printer icon fails to appear in the Control Panel list of Printers.

One workaround we have found is to install our product locally (not through an RDP connection). After the local install is complete, our software and the embeded Black Ice TIFF driver work fine over RDP. It's only the install piece that seems to fail over RDP.

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

The Black Ice Printer Drivers MUST be installed from the local machine, they cannot be installed using a remote client because the Port Monitor cannot be added to the machine through such an installation attempt.

One work-around we have found is to use a different remote desktop technology to conduct a remote install. For example, we seem to be able to use VNC to conduct the remote install. After the install, we discard VNC and use RDP. Does Black Ice have any comments or recommendations regarding this work-around? Thanks.

Remote Administration tools such as PCAnywhere, VNC, etc. operate differently than Microsoft RDP (terminal server connections). Through a remote login (RDP), you cannot create a port on the target system, however when you are using a remote administration tool to login to the remote machine itself, the remote administration tool acts like you are sitting at the console. This way, the system will not block the addition of the port to the system and you will be able to install the Black Ice printer driver in this manner.
