Besides the predefined sizes, one can add custom large paper sizes (e.g., technical drawing paper sizes) to the Black Ice Printer Driver that exceed the Windows paper size limitation. To create a custom large paper size, please see the following steps:

  1. Please navigate to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > right-click on the Black Ice Printer Driver > Printing Preferences > Device Settings tab > click on the Edit Paper List… button.

  2. On the Edit paper list window, please click on the Add new button.

  3. Create a new paper size (for example: 36.00 x 275.00 inches) and click on the OK button:

  4. The new paper size has been successfully added to the paper list. Click on the OK button to proceed.

  5. On the Device Settings tab, please select the created paper size from the Paper dropdown menu and click on the OK button on the bottom of the Printing Preferences window to apply the changes.

How is Page Size Computed and Image Size Translated into Pixels?

Every page is defined in either millimeters or inches. The Microsoft DEVMODE data structure uses millimeters as the base for computation. To compute between mm and pixels, use the following formula:

mm = pixel x 254/DPI or pixel = mm x DPI/254

The maximum paper size that can be created is 32760x32760 mm, 1290x1290 inches, or 99999x99999 pixels.

The maximum page size can be further limited by the used file format and the available memory and disk space.
E.g.: The maximum page size supported by the TIFF file format is 65535x65535 pixels.

The maximum recommended PDF page size is 200x200 inches. PDF documents above this size can be created, but cannot be read by Adobe Reader. Other PDF viewers, like Foxit Reader or Chrome are able to read larger PDF sizes.

When dealing with page size limitations, the used resolution (DPI) is also important.
E.g.: It is possible to create a 500-inch TIFF file at a 100 DPI resolution, but not at a 300 DPI resolution, because:

500 inches x 100 DPI = 50000 pixels, which is below the 65535-pixel limit.
500 inches x 300 DPI = 150000 pixels, which is above the 65535-pixel limit.
