Receiving Faxes

This is the most basic way to use Impact ColorFax. If you do not have a fax machine, you can use this software instead as your PC fax machine. Impact ColorFax offers you much more than a plain fax machine. It will store your faxes without printing them, saving you space and time. Many times it is not necessary to print every incoming fax. But when you want to print every incoming fax you can do it with a normal printer (for example an ink-jet printer), which produces higher quality print than most fax machines. You can annotate (place text and graphics on the page) your faxes before printing them.  As long as a modem is opened with Impact ColorFax, and the modem is available (not currently being used for faxing) then Impact ColorFax will automatically receive any faxes sent to you. In order to receive faxes you have to do the following:

1.    Select the Fax menu Open Fax Modem menu item. The following screen will appear:

2.    Select a port from the Free Ports list. If no port is displayed in this list, you will not be able to receive faxes with your modem (unless it is displayed as an OPENED port – in this case your port is already opened).

3.    Do not change anything, just press the OK button. Now your port is opened and ready for receiving faxes.

4.    When receiving an incoming fax, the FAX C++ Driver Manager window will then appear. This will give you the status of reception as well as errors in transmission. If you want to cut off, just simply press the Abort button.

The received fax will be listed in the Inbox folder of the Impact ColorFax window. The filename will consist of the name or fax number of the sender followed by the Date and Time.  If the transmission was successful, you can look at your fax, just simply double click somewhere on the green line, or simply click on the item once and it will be displayed in the preview pane.

Impact ColorFax can be configured to display a notification in the lower right hand corner of your monitor that you have received a fax, and will include either the fax number or identification string of the fax sender.  Additionally, Impact ColorFax can be configured to display the received fax automatically on the screen after it has been received.  Impact ColorFax can also print every received fax to your printer.  These features can be enabled under the Fax menuà Config by selecting the Receive tab.

If the fax transmission was unsuccessful, the icon of the fax will be marked with a red X sign on it. In this case you cannot view the fax.

You can rotate, flip, invert or annotate your received fax, and of course you can print it.

To print the fax, press the File menu Print menu item. The following dialog will be shown:

Press the Options button to configure alternate printing options.  This will open the following window:

Use Image DPI-                                           Print the image using the images DPI (resolution) settings as opposed to the printers DPI settings (may result in printing a single image on more than one page)

Stretch to Fit Page-                                    Stretches the image to fill the page the printers DPI settings (will fit an image onto a single page, even if the image is bigger than a standard page)

Scale to Fit Page Proportionally-           Scales the image to fit the page while maintaining the same relative proportions

Center the Image Horizontally-               Center the image horizontally on the printed page

Center the Image Vertically-                    Center the image vertically on the printed page

Press the OK button to return to the print window.

Select the printer that you want to print to. Click on the OK button. The printing of the fax will begin immediately.

About Received Faxes

When Impact ColorFax receives a fax, it is stored as a TIFF file on your local computer.  TIFF files are image files used for faxing.  You can save the received faxes into a different format using the Save and Save As menu items under the File menu.  For additional information, please see the Saving Faxes section of this manual.

Using the Phone Book

The phone book is used to store and organize contact information and fax numbers.  You can store three pieces of information in the phone book:  the company name, individual name and the fax number.

Setting up the phone book is critical if you plan on doing any frequent faxing, and it stores the information that is used to send every fax page, as well as fill in the optional cover page and fax header.
